In the shadows of Gotham City…
Is the Riddler planning his next crime? Who has discovered Batman’s identity? Will the Joker Escape from Arkham Asylum?
On September 17th we welcome the first licensed set into the ever expanding Rory’s Story Cubes family - Rory’s Story Cubes®: Batman.
The aim of the new Rory’s Story Cubes®: Batman set is to inspire new and emerging storytellers to create their very own stories with their favourite Batman villains, gadgets and locations.
Imagine the challenges faced in designing icons for one of the best known superheroes of three generations!
One of the many reasons the characters associated with Batman are so popular are their subtle characteristics, for example Joker’s evil grin and pin hole eyes. In designing the cubes, this status couldn’t be ignored. Staying true to the characters made the icons both easier and more challenging to design.
“To make sure I captured the essence of a Batman tale in only 54 icons, I read or re-read many of the classic Batman tales: Hush, The Long Halloween, A Death in the Family, Year One, Murderer/Fugitive, Batman & Son, Dark Victory, Joker, The Man Who Laughs, Knightfall, Batman and the Monster Men, the entire Scott Snyder run on Batman along with more issues of Detective Comics than I care to remember!” Rory O'Connor, creator of Rory's Story Cubes® says of the design process.
With an ever growing number of icons to complete, Rory enlisted the help of two illustrators, Land Robot and LeyLeyLeu. They joined him in the studio to help bring his vision for the Rory’s Story Cubes®: Batman icons to life, from doodle stage to near completion. Rory would then check each icon as it neared completion, making and suggesting changes or adding finishing touches himself where necessary until each icon met his exacting standards.
“It was a real challenge to capture the Batcave as an icon. They was just no way we could fit the Dinosaur or Giant Penny that we all associate with it. While working on this, LeyLeyLeu drew the stalactites in a way that reminded LandRobot of the Batman symbol. We exaggerated this, so that if you look closely you can see how the bat symbol snuck in.”
